Vanilla Essential Oil in Aromatherapy

Updated: Jun 20, 2022

There's no such thing as vanilla essential oil but there are a few different options when it comes to using this delicious spice. You can find extracts like absolute or CO2 extract in order for your scenting needs and they're both equally exquisite!

Plant Family : Orchidaceae. Vanilla planifolia is an orchid with edible fruit — pods also called vanilla beans.

Production : The three types of vanilla go through different production processes. See the next section for details.

Aroma : Sweet, rich, warm

Is vanilla safe to use during pregnancy? Likely safe in small amounts, but consult a professional.

Vanilla Production

To make a delicious and refreshing beverage, one must first soak the vanilla beans in ethyl alcohol. The soothing scent of this lovely spice is then captured by soaking it with water for several days until all that’s left are beautiful crystals!

Removing the solvent from vanilla extract creates a thick, gooey substance that is usually semi-liquid or even solids. It's best dissolved in water and alcohol based solutions but cannot be properly mixed with other oils like carrier oil since it doesn't break down easily at all when removed this way which means you'll end up wasting your money trying to use them for something they were never meant for!

To make vanilla absolute, the curing process must be carefully monitored. After six months of drying and fermentation it's time for an extraction that utilises some serious machinery in order to get all those delicious flavours!

The absolute is a dark brown, viscous product with the strongest scent of all three vanillas. It dissolves better in carrier oil than oleoresin but still doesn't completely dissolve - some products may do less or more damage to it depending on their properties.

The vanilla pods are put inside a stainless steel chamber that's injected with carbon dioxide (CO2) gas. The magic of this process makes for an extract which is closer in nature to essential oils than other types, and has many health benefits!

The CO2 extract is a creamy pale yellow to tan colour. It's a supercritical fluid that pulls oil from pods and leaves behind no solvent residue in the vanilla!
